The conversion of thermal energy into mechanical energy is of great technical importance in thermodynamics. Such conversion processes take place, for example, in power plants to drive generators for power generation or in combustion engines to drive the wheels of an automobile. While in power plants, for example, coal is burned for obtaining heat energy, in combustion engines diesel, petrol or natural gas is used.
